Rescue Recycling To
Be Suspended
Due
to the economic downturn, the Rescue Mission is suspending its
Rescue Recycling program until at least the 2nd quarter of 2009,
officials say.
"When
we started this program, we were able to earn 70 cents a pound for
aluminum, 4 cents a pound for plastic, $80 a ton for cardboard, $70 a
ton for newspaper, and $40 a ton for mixed paper," said Rev.
Billy Fox, Executive Director, "Now we are only getting 28 cents
a pound for aluminum, $15 a ton for cardboard and newspaper, and
nothing for plastic and mixed paper."
The
Mission says the public's response to the program can still be
considered a success, but the Mission simply cannot afford to continue
operating the program until market conditions improve.
"The greatest
lesson we have learned is that, like everything in our free economy,
recycling materials are subject to market ups and downs," Fox
said.
The program will be
suspended starting January 1st, until further notice.
